The Khalfan mark: the letter khaa

About Khalfan

The one who comes after

Khalfan comes from the root خ ل ف, "to come after". It is what this shelf is: stories handed on, from the people who told them to us, to the children who will tell them next.

خلفان کے معنی ہیں: وہ جو بعد میں آتا ہے۔ یہ وہ کہانیاں ہیں جو ہمیں سونپی گئیں۔

How we make the books

Funny first

A child should want the story again. No moral spelled out at the end: the story does that on its own.

Told the old way

We keep the real endings, and we say so before you buy when an ending is hard.

From here

Pakistan is named in every book, and the Urdu sits right under the English.

Made to be heard

Every page is written to be said out loud, and every page can be heard read aloud.

Who makes them

The stories are retold in English and in Urdu by Abu Khalfan, in Lahore. Khalfan is a small house: one shelf of books for children aged 5 to 7, growing one folktale at a time.
